1.)What’s your favorite thing about California?- Probably the weather. There is just so much to do here. You guys have mountains, farmland, and lots of nature.

2.)Do you have a guilty pleasure?- Chocolate chip cookies! I can eat chocolate chip cookies all day, but I don’t.

3.)What’s your favorite memory at Sonoma?- I feel like it will be this weekend when I visit Yosemite. One of the main reasons I came here was to visit Yosemite. I’m so excited for it. I’ve been to Yellowstone before, but I’ve always wanted to go to Yosemite. My friend I met here is also joining me, so it should be really fun. The weather is supposed to be rainy, but I know we’ll still have a great time.

4.)Who do you look up to? My mom. She just knows how to handle all her problems and everything in life so well. I hope to be able to do the same thing as I grow older.

5.)Was there anything that surprised you about Sonoma?- Yes, how small the class sizes are. At the University of Massachusetts they’re huge, sometimes over 100 people are in a classroom. I like how here they’re smaller and you actually get to know the people.

6.) What’s your favorite hobby?- I love playing the drums, so it’s hard being here without my drum set. My favorite drummer is definitely Travis Barker from Blink 182! I also love hiking.

1.) What do you like most about Sonoma?- The nature on the campus, it’s so beautiful. I’m from the city, so much more green here. A lot of trails too. There is no where to hike in Japan.

2.)What have you accomplished while being here?- I met a lot of friends and my English has gotten a lot better. I hope to continue speaking English in Japan.

3.)Do you have a guilty pleasure?- Chocolate and french fries! I’ll eat any french fries, I ate so much french fries in the kitchens last semester when I had a meal plan.

4.)Who do you look up to?- My mom because she is the most independent woman I know. She is such a sweetheart and I hope to be like her.

5.) Why did you choose California?- The weather! My second choice was Wisconsin, but I didn’t want to go somewhere cold. I really liked the program they offered in California and the tuition was affordable.

6.)What’s your favorite food?- French fries! I could eat them all day, but I’m trying not to!

IEEC went to: Hike Fairfield Observatory Event

This event was a great way to escape SSU campus and get some fresh air this past Saturday! Located near Gravity Hill this large expanse of land is practically untouched with a wide abundance of wild flowers, fallen trees, and small woodland creatures. This event was about three hours long but the reward for climbing all the way to the top gave us a great view of Sonoma County!

Cancelled IEEC Event:  Two Day Retreat in Arnold, California

Unfortunantly, due to a lack of interest in this event the IEEC has had to cancel this two night trip. But a new soultion has been made with a event on April 30th going to Six Flags Amusement Park!

Upcoming IEEC Event: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Event

This event is held Sunday, April 30th at 9:00am until 8:00pm. We will be meeting at the flagpoles on SSU campus then we will take off for Six Flags for the Vallejo location. The price of this event is $35 and this includes transportation to and from the event, some snacks for  the day, and the ticket for the park! Whether you like roller coaster or not, Six Flags is fun for everyone! In addition to rides, there are shows, delicious fair food, games, and much more!

1.) What do you like best about Sonoma State University?-It’s got to be the people. I love the campus and the good Mexican food. The classes for Physics are great so far too.

2.) What’s the largest difference between Hawaii and California?- The location and the environment. The weather is super cold up here compared to Hawaii. There’s also a lot more people here. Lots of different activities to participate in. I’m closer to a big city here which offers lots of opportunity.

3.) Do you have a guilty pleasure?- Fast food definitely. Like In-N-Out and Chick-fil-A. For the grand opening of Chick-fil-A, in Rohnert Park I slept outside to get free Chick-fil-A for a year.

4.) What’s your favorite hobby?- Probably basketball because I’ve been doing it my whole life.

5.) Is there anything that surprised you from being here?- The location and being so close to San Francisco. I was not expecting the weather would be so cold. The campus is a lot larger and more beautiful than I originally expected it to be. It was better in person.

6.) What influenced you to transfer here permanently? –The social life here. There aren’t college parties in Hawaii the way there are here. It’s nice being so close to the city. I hope to join a fraternity or something next year.

Investiture of Dr. Sakaki

This event starts Thursday, April 20th at 9:00am till 7:30pm. It is located at Weill Hall, Green Music Center.  Different events will be happening throughout that time period so be sure to read the schedule for the day and go be apart of SSU history! The below schedule is taken from the Seawolf living website.

“Investiture Mini Conference | 9 AM – 12 PM

A campus-wide event (open to the public) that will feature many exciting endeavors — including presentations, discussions, and performances born of our campus thinkers and creators around themes of: Community Engagement, Sustainability, Globalization, and Diversity.

Dr Sakaki Investiture Ceremony | 2-4 PM | Weill Hall, Green Music Center

Defined as the “act of ceremony of conferring the authority and symbols of a high office,” an investiture is an academic ceremony in which a new leader is “vested” with the official powers of office. Held during a president’s first year in office, an investiture provides an opportunity to welcome a new chapter in a university’s history and celebrate as a community. In short: “Inauguration” refers to events planned to celebrate a new president, “installation” is the actual moment the new president assumes office and an “investiture” is the ceremony itself.

Campus Reception for Dr Sakaki Investiture | 4-5 PM | Trione Plaza, Green Music Center

A Celebration of the Investiture of  Judy K. Sakaki featuring Hiroshima | 7:30 PM | Weill Hall, Green Music Center

Contemporary jazz masters Hiroshima will be performing as part of the Investiture of Dr. Judy K. Sakaki. “The group, led by Dan Kuramoto, continues to make their own East Meets West contemporary jazz.”

17799258_10155239443014853_1124903737694750749_n

This week’s student spotlight is Lynn from South Korea! Lynn is very excited to be studying in California.

1.) What do you like most about Sonoma?- I think the people here. I would like to say the weather, but it’s only been two months since I arrived and it’s so rainy. It rains a lot! I love all the friends I’ve made here. There’s a lot of international students here and my roommates are so nice. They love Korean food, so we had a Korean dinner night last week. I’m not the best cook, but I try to make Korean food for them sometimes. People are just so kind to me, even though I’m a stranger.

2.)What do you hope to accomplish while being here?- I came here because I wanted to escape from my life in Korea. I’m a senior and it is very tough to be in college in Korea. I’m not sure what I want to do and I’m supposed to be prepared in Korea. I was too sensitive in Korea and I feel so much more relaxed after coming here. I am trying to figure out who I am. One of my favorite quotes is “Life isn’t about finding who you are, it’s about creating who you are.”

3.)Do you have a guilty pleasure?- I really like ASMR which is a soundtrack that helps you relax. There are natural sounds, such as the rain or the wind. I love that, but some of my friends think it’s weird.

4.)Who do you look up to?- My parents definitely. They always inspire and support me. They are the people I look most up to.

5.) Why did you choose California?- Everyone wants to be in California! I had an imagination of being in California, but I soon realized that was Southern California, not here! Before coming here, the only city I had been to in The United States was New York. New York was very Eastern and cold, while California was very Western and everyone is so nice. I love the sunsets here too!

6.)What’s your favorite food?- I really love Korean, but I always try to put Mexican hot sauce to add spiciness. I really love Mexican food too!

Seawolf Living Event: Clothesline Project

This three day event in Salazar Plaza starts Tuesday, April 4th starting at 10:00am till 2:00pm with the same time frame for April 5th and April 6th.

The following passage was taken from the Seawolf Living website. Please follow the link below for more information.

http://www.seawolfliving.com/featured/2017/4/4/clothesline-project

“The Clothesline Project was created to bring awareness to the issue of violence against women. For women who have been affected by violence, it is a means of expressing their emotions by decorating a t-shirt. After the shirts have been decorated, they are hung on a clothesline display. The intention of the display is to honor survivors and act as a memorial for victims. It is also intended to aid in the healing process for those who were directly affected and those who have lost someone special to violence. Lastly, the clothesline display is to educate society and promote awareness, as well as to document violent crimes against women.”
